This cute little semi-outdoor eatery is a must-visit for residents of, and visitors to the FCT.
With menu offerings like their ‘Breaded Fish’, ‘Fish in Batter’, some interesting Brown rice and the mysterious “Ghana’ sauce, H&H Fish Place is an interesting departure from the regular fish joints.
My friend Aye and I have been there on a number of occasions and once with both families. One item we always look forward to is the “Breaded Fish, she for the crust and I for the inside. Rather ironic since she’s the more mild-mannered of the two of us….(when you get it).
The breadcrumbs coating of the Breaded Fish fillet is crispy without being overly dry and the ‘meat’ inside is buttery and light and tender on the tongue…. I find the crust a little too rich for my palate and always have to have a bit of the flesh and a bit of the crust together to enjoy both tastes and textures at once. I hear that’s how normal people eat as against my preference for peeling off the crust like a savage. Nkechi
I love the brown rice. Nicely seasoned with herbs and cooked with well spiced minced beef, it provides a nice accompaniment to the fish. I did ask if it was natural brown rice or so named because the mix of herbs, spices and seasoning are responsible for the colour. Apparently it is brown rice for real. Sounds healthy, but then what do I know about these things. Lol
The other item we did try on our last visit was the ‘Chicken & Chips’… Chicken wings though. Chips/Fries are about the same across eateries in Abuja, falling into one of three categories: Over-salted, just right but not crispy, or crispy but totally bland. These were well, not a new, defining moment. No points won or lost.

The wings, are, in Aye’s words “the very best in Abuja” They’re nicely seasoned and cooked through. No uncertain pinkies or uncomfortable uneven tenderness…. Chicken wings the Naija way.
Food aside, what did I think of the ambience, the environment, the general ‘where and how’ of it all?…. The seating wasn’t the most comfy or most pleasing to the eye.. The hut is neat enough (whatever does that even mean?), but I’m a bit of a finicky abut about places I go to spend my miserly N500 bucks and I tend to notice and did notice that food wasn’t served fast, splashes and some peeling on the wallpaper, and the incessant creaking of the overhead fans which detracted from an otherwise pleasant experience.
On one occasion, the place was still being mopped at 11:30 am. I mean if you open at 11am to patrons, we don’t want to be eating to the ‘appetising’ sight of a mop. Being dragged across the floor, do we? On the plus side though, I really like the external seating ‘food court’ arrangement. Over the Christmas holiday last year, it looked really beautiful with Christmas lights adorning the perimeter, and the combined aromas from H&H, Grills In & Out and a pizzeria (which name I can’t for the life of me recall), as well as other food stalls, made for an extremely welcoming atmosphere. With a variety of eateries as well as aforementioned seating areas, Food City (that’s the name of the place where all of em eateries are) gets my personal recommendation for family time out.
So there…. if you’ve a contrary view, lets know ok. To everyone who asked that I check out other places, I’ll get to them. Promise.
